FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions What is a short haul move? This is a move that is less than 450 miles. Make sure to inquire with your moving company as you may have to pay long distance charges even for short haul moves. What is a local move? This usually refers to moves that are less than 100 miles and within the same state. What is an intrastate move? This refers to a move of more than 100 miles within the same state. What are bulky articles? These refer to heavy items such as cars, snowmobiles, trailers or cars. Extra charges are usually applied because these items take up more space in the moving trucks/vans and require additional labour to load and unload. What is a moving kit? This is a kit that has been designed by professional packers to include everything you need to pack an entire home or apartment. Can I pack and move some smaller items before the movers arrive? Yes, you should spend your time packing boxes and have friends and family members spend their time carrying the boxes to the moving truck. What should I do if I haven’t finished packing by my moving day? If you realized you won’t be finished packing by your move date, make sure to inform your moving company as soon as possible. You may be able to hire professional packers to help you finish the job or move on a different date. Your movers may be able to pack up a small amount of items, but you will end up paying more for the move. How should I pack breakable items such as glass, crystal or china? Make sure you choose a container that has a sturdy lid and room for lots of cushioning. Place a 2-3 inch layer of crushed paper on the bottom of the box and then wrap each item individually with a soft material for protective padding. Pack the heaviest items first followed by lighter ones and use crushed paper to fill in any empty spaces in the box. After sealing the box with tape, mark it “FRAGILE” and list the contents. What should I do if one of my items is damaged during the move? Professional movers and packers do their best to ensure all your belongings arrive safely to your destination. However, damage sometimes occurs. In this case, please email or call your moving company as soon as possible with the details. What is an intrastate move? This refers to a move of more than 100 miles within the same state. What is a binding estimate? This guarantees the exact cost of the move based on any services requested or deemed necessary at the time of the estimate. Additional services that are requested or required such as shuttle service, additional packing or adding items will be added to the cost of the estimate. What should I do with my plants? We recommend that you move your plants yourself as they can suffer from a lack of light and water and temperature extremes in the truck. Please note that some countries will not allow the import of plants or other agricultural items if you’re planning an overseas move. Do I have to empty all of my filing cabinets? Metal filing cabinets with 2-drawers can be left full, but you should empty the top 2 drawers of a 4-drawer cabinet. You should also completely empty all lateral file cabinets and all drawers of a wood cabinet. |
